Aoi tsubaki

Plot

One day, shortly after the death of Shirō Tsubaki, Aoi gives a boxed lunch to a hungry oni (ogre/demon). To her surprise, he responds by whisking her away to the Hidden Realm where ayakashi live and declaring that she will become his bride. The oni introduces himself as Ōdanna and later explains that he is the master of an inn for ayakashi known as “Tenjin-ya”. Her grandfather, the only known human able to travel freely in between both the Apparent Realm (Utsushiyo) and Hidden Realm (Kakuriyo), had during his lifetime racked up a debt of 100 million yen at the inn. Lacking the money to repay the inn owner, Shiro had instead offered the hand of his granddaughter in marriage as collateral for his debt.

Furious and bewildered, Aoi refused to marry Ōdanna and declared that she will instead work off her debt by finding a job at Tenjin-ya. However, the various ayakashi employees treat her coldly and refuse to work with her. The sole exceptions are Kasuga and Ginji, a shapeshifting nine-tailed fox. Ginji used to own a restaurant on the inn’s grounds, but it failed due to a lack of customers. After the two bond over cooking for one another, Ginji suggests that Aoi reopen the restaurant and cook food from the human world, which ayakashi find extremely delicious.

Relationships

Shirō Tsubaki

When sent to the adoption center, Shirō gladly took Aoi in and raised her. He taught her how to cook food which matches the sweet and light flavours ayakashi likes. She attended his funeral when he fell down the stairs and hit his head, having him sent to the hospital. She wanted to cook for him before he died, but his last meal was hospital food. 
It was Shirō’s fault that Aoi has to live at Tenjin-ya in order to pay off the debt he left before he died. Aoi continues to learn move about her grandfather from the ayakashi she encounters in Tenjin-ya.

Ōdanna

While passing by, Aoi meets a masked man and gives him food. She then meets him again and is left a wrapped box as well as a rose-quartz hairpin ornament. She proceeds to open this and is sent to the hidden realm to be Ōdanna’s bride. As collateral for Shirō’s debt of 100 million yen, Aoi is forced to marry him. She immediately declines and decides to work to pay off her grandfather’s debt.  

Since arriving in Tenjin-ya, she has grown comfortable with Ōdanna and enjoys learning more about him as they spend more time together. At first, she feared him because he enjoys eating human girls, but soon she came to respect him. Aoi does develop feelings for the ogre that she struggles to admit to and she eventually stops correcting Ōdanna when he calls her his bride to others, proving how she’s grown comfortable with the idea of marrying him. The two almost kissed in their mission to obtain a mermaid scale, which Aoi would have let happen, had Ōdanna not pulled away first.

Ginji

Aoi meets Ginji on her first night at Tenjin-ya. He gives her food and shows her his shapeshifting abilities. Ginji is the one who urges Aoi to open her own restaurant so that she can earn the money needed to pay back her grandfather’s debt. Ginji has proven to be a loyal friend and is always willing to help Aoi. Although many at Tenjin-ya are suspicious of Ginji, since he was originally from Orio-ya (a rival inn), Aoi is one of the only ones to fully trust Ginji.

Oryō

At first, Oryō does not like Aoi. Oryō also liked the master and didn’t think Aoi was good enough to marry him. She also didn’t think a human should be working at Tenjin-ya, as Oryō worked hard to get where she is at the inn. However, after Aoi cares for Oryō when she falls ill, the two become closer and Oryō comes to respect Aoi as a chef and a good person. 

Akatsuki

Like most of the other staff at Tenjin-ya, Akatsuki doesn’t think Aoi belongs at the inn. However, after Aoi nurses Akatsuki back to health, he comes to like her. He enjoys her cooking and even helped hang the new sign in Aoi’s restaurant. 

Byakuya

As chief of the accounting office of Tenjin-ya, Byakuya thinks Aoi is destined to fail in her attempts of opening up her eatery. However, after Aoi receives a successful review in a newspaper, the restaurant becomes prosperous, thus leading to Byakuya’s respect. Aoi also caught Byakuya playing with the tube kittens in the forest, which he found embarrassing.

Chibi

Chibi is a Kappa Aoi is fond of. He later joins her in the hidden realm claiming to be her sidekick. He is devoted to Aoi and doesn’t hesitate to join her on any of her adventures that she sets out on even if he is scared. He is always happy to eat cucumbers (and other foods) from Aoi.

Umi-bouzu

When Aoi calls for Chibi to come back, thinking he will disturb the umi-bouzu, the latter suddenly becomes sad and scared. Aoi further lifts the blinds to discover the small child with Chibi clinging to the umi-bouzu. Aoi touches the scared ayakashi and is given a vision of how lonely and hungry he always feels — a feeling that Aoi is empathetic to due to her own loneliness when she was a child. She then decides to gather everyone on the island to eat and share company with the umi-bouzu. Everyone has a good time until it is time for the umi-bouzu to return to the sea. Before he leaves, Aoi asks him if he wanted to stay with her but he cannot due to his job of protecting the Southern Land. He leaves, saying he will see them in 100 years — although Aoi notes she may not be around by then.

Appearance & Personality

Tsubaki is a slender, attractive girl with red eyes; her irises have a dull luster to represent her poor vision. She has long dark blue hair; some of it is pinned up with a red butterfly-shaped hairpiece or ribbon, while the rest hangs loose, partly covering the right side of her face and reaching her hips in the back. She wears a red-orange kimono tied at the waist by a thick white ribbon.

In the anime adaptation, Tsubaki’s eyes are purple instead of red; her right eye is shown to be constantly closed in the present, implying that it was damaged or lost at some point. Her hair is also longer, going down to her ankles in the back.

Tsubaki is introduced as a polite, considerate and friendly girl who has no desire to play the Survival Game; instead, she simply wishes to survive the Dead End predicted by her diary. She is quite intelligent and relies on her own intuition, believing Yuno Gasai will be Yukiteru Amano’s undoing. She forms a friendship with Yukiteru, describing him as cute and harmless. However, she forms a tense rivalry with Yuno, both trying to pull Yukiteru from one direction to another.

Tsubaki’s true colors are revealed along with her backstory; bitter, angry and emotional, she despises the world, the Omekata religion and her life. She deeply desires the power of God in order to destroy the world and recreate it in the way she sees fit. She is quite manipulative, having tricked Yuki, Yuno, Keigo Kurusu, Minene Uryu, and Yomotsu Hirasaka into coming to the temple in order to eliminate all of them easily. She plays the false role of a damsel in distress in order to easily lure in Yuki, mocking his habit to quickly trust people against him.

Upon revealing her true self, Tsubaki attempts to quell her own pain by tormenting others, primarily Yuno. She kisses Yukiteru just to watch Yuno squirm, and later suggests that several of her male followers gang-rape Yuno to lure out Yukiteru. This contributes to her ultimate demise, as she fails to consider how her actions could galvanize her victims or their allies; kissing Yukiteru prompts Yuno to attack her and nearly murder her on the spot, while her rape attempt gives Yukiteru the resolve to confront and kill her.

Tsubaki’s most valued possession, also known as Temari, is a handball that her mother gave her in her childhood; her descent to madness was expedited when she lost it during a «cleansing ritual» in the temple. She would only be reunited with her treasure after the destruction of her Diary; in her last moment of existence, Tsubaki could only shed tears of anger (in the manga) or sadness (in the anime) at the fact that the ball returned to her too late for it to matter.

Personality

Tsubaki is a serious, mature, and intelligent person. She has always followed her orders from the Control Organization and has complete faith in them (likely to honor her family name). She has always had a childhood crush on Jin, and deeply loves and cares about him. She was also good friends with Noel, Makoto and Carl Clover when they were at Military Academy. However, when Hazama told Tsubaki about the alternative timeline where she was always with Jin as his secretary and how Noel usurped that position away from her, she becomes extremely jealous. She begins to harbor a hatred toward her best friend that, once manipulated by Emperor’s magic, evolves into a desire to kill her in order to be with Jin. Even after changing sides, she still respects Hakumen despite sharing different views.

In BlazBlue: Chronophantasma, Tsubaki’s personality had almost been completely overwritten by the effects of Mind Eater, the spell that Izanami cast on her to control her directly. Her devotion to the Control Organization had been taken to its greatest extreme, and she was little more than a mindless drone who lived to carry out any and all of the Emperor’s orders, including killing her own friends. When Jin confronted her, however, she showed signs of resistance due to her feelings for him. 

After Makoto, Noel, and Jin manage to free her from the Mind Eater curse, she realizes that the Emperor’s justice is a lie and decides that she will fight for a justice she believes in as an individual: to fight for the people she loves and the friends she cherishes. Even after eventually learning of Ragna’s actual blood-relation to Jin, she still acts antagonistic towards him, but comically dreams of an awkward possibility of accepting him as a possible brother-in-law. Another comical instance of her otherwise serious personality is her being infatuated with romanticized settings, as seen in Bang’s gag reel in Continuum Shift and/or her enthusiasm with the Six Heroes.

Appearance

Tsubaki is a slender, fair skinned woman. She has long, brown hair that is pulled into a bun and bangs that frame her face. A gold pipe is pushed through her bun to keep it in place. Her eyes are a deep shade of red, and she is usually seen wearing a light pink shade of lipstick.

She also bears strong resemblance to her ancestor, Shizuka Akame; both physically and in her choice of weapon. As a teenager, Tsubaki wears a shorts-sleeved shirt with a high collar. She wears a black layered skirt, and underneath, a pair of shorts. Lastly she is seen sporting above-the-knee boots. Tsubaki’s hair is kept in a neat bun, and her bangs come to just below her chin.

In Part II, she is seen wearing a teal, half-sleeve top that has a zipper down the front, and is in similar color and style to her Part I shirt. Around her waist is a gold obi, and a long black skirt covers her legs; only allowing the last half of her calves be seen, which are covered in fishnets. Tsubaki now wears a pair of gloves and her thigh high boots are changed to heeled sandals.

Lastly, in notable changes, her bun becomes more loosely tied than in Part I, and her bangs have grown longer.

In The Last, Tsubaki has become visibly more mature and her hair is let down instead of being tied up. Her new outfit is a simple, teal and yellow colored, knee-length, long-sleeved, cowl-neck dress. A thin yellow ribbon ties around her waist.

Powers & Abilities

Spiritual sight: Aoi had inherited her grandfather’s strong spiritual powers, including the ability to see ayakashi, which is not visible to the normal human eye. In the Apparent Realm (Utsushiyo), she had grown up being able to see ayakashi since young and had a few past encounters and incidents with some ayakashi. In her past memories, her appeasing to the encountered hungry evil ayakashi with her delicious cooked food had apparently saved her life several times. Aside from using food to appease hungry evil ayakashi, she is mainly seen occasionally giving food and feeding to smaller weaker hungry ayakashi like the the group of temari kappa by a river she passed by daily, who are vulnerable preys to bigger hungry ayakashi. However, with the knowledge of her being a strong target for ayakashi, she often chooses to avoid eye contact and ignore bigger hungry ayakashi who pose as bigger threats to her safety.

Cooking skills (spiritual energy food): Thanks to Shirō’s emphasis on Aoi’s cooking training since she came to live in his household, she has become an excellent cook with an ability to make spiritual energy food that ayakashi find delicious (sweet and light flavours) and that also helps to replenish and restore ayakashi’s spiritual powers. Initially, Aoi was under the impression that her grandfather preferred the sweet and light flavoured food that ayakashi loved. However, it was only later when she met and conversed with both Matsuba Sama and Akatsuki in the Hidden Realm (Kakuriyo) that she realized that her grandfather had actually preferred strong, salty flavours and found the ayakashi’s sweet and light food palate bland. Knowing Aoi would definitely be a strong target for ayakashi with her inherited strong spiritual powers, he had most likely trained her to cook accordingly to the ayakashi’s sweet and light food flavours, a form of protection against them whenever she encountered them in the future. As a result, she had mentioned that cooking has become a sort of stress-reliever and favourite pastime for her, and she likes cooking for ayakashi as it solely helps her to get closer to them.

Naming

• “Tsubaki” is Japanese for “camellia”, a huge beautiful flower that has no scent, yet wilts easily. In Japanese flower symbology, red, yellow and white camellia’s represent “in love”, “longing” and “waiting”, respectively. “Yayoi” means “march” (the month of her birthday), “life” and “extensive”, while it also literally means “Increasing Life”. “Yayoi” is the original name of the third month on the lunar calendar, expressing the lunar month theme of the Twelve Originators.
• In the original Japanese version, her moves have theme of justice or divinity.
• In English localization, her special moves bear names from movements/chants for a Requiem Mass.

Appearance

• Tsubaki’s Astral Heat uses what appears to be the statue located in the Cathedral. However, in BlazBlue: Chronophantasma, the statue is black, reflecting Tsubaki’s corruption.
• When she became corrupted by Izanami’s magic, her black clothes have silver/white highlights and a green ribbon tying her corset in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. It has been changed in BlazBlue: Chronophantasma, it shows her with her original gold/yellow highlights and red ribbon.
• In BlazBlue: Alter Memory, Tsubaki’s eyes became dark blue after she fights with Noel with the usage of the Sealed Armament: Izayoi.
• When Amane Nishiki uses his Astral Heat on Tsubaki, she has red eyes, despite hers being originally blue.
• She is the only character that has color alterations in her attire: Starting with a yellowish uniform in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, passing through a black and red scheme in Chronophantasma (due to the Mind Eater curse), and coming with a whiter version in Centralfiction.

• Tsubaki’s birthday, March 14, is on the same day as White Day in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China, which is an mirror equivalent to Valentine’s Day where girls respond to boys who gave them gifts on the said holiday.
• In the drama track The Wheel of Fortune, it is revealed that Tsubaki actually loves chocolate so much, that Jin advised her that it was harmful for her health.
• According to Mu-12’s winquote against Tsubaki in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II, the Izayoi’s side effect has already affected 65% of Tsubaki.
• Tsubaki, Noel, Jin, and Terumi are the only characters in the BlazBlue series with playable alternate forms. In Tsubaki’s case, Izayoi serves this role.
• During her gag ending in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, Tsubaki admits that she hates pandas upon seeing the panda (Lao Jiu) in Litchi Faye Ling’s hair. The reason for this is unknown. Strangely, she is extremely gullible in the gag ending, as she even believes that Litchi (who at the time was drunk) had been taken over by Lao Jiu and gets ‘coerced’ into cosplaying and getting a new Peking duck.

• Tsubaki is featured in Square Enix game Lord of Vermilion III along with Rachel Alucard and her Izayoi form.
• Tsubaki, along with Ragna and Noel, appears in the mobile game Seven Knights, with Kokonoe being Japan server’s exclusive. Tsubaki starts in her Military Academy attire, when upgrading into five stars she will wear her BlazBlue: Continuum Shift outfit, and upon upgrading into six stars her suit will turn black, like in BlazBlue: Chronophantasma. In the Korean server, she is available only as a costume for the game’s original character.
